Concussion. It's... complicated!
Concussions are mild traumatic brain injuries whereby the brain has been rattled in the skull. Since the brain is the control centre of the body, a concussion can affect a variety of body systems causing a wide range of symptoms.
Concussion Care is a guided approach to physiotherapy assessment and treatment that helps you recover after a concussion. It starts with a thorough assessment to understand your symptoms, such as headaches, dizziness, mood alterations, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating. From there, treatment may include education, gentle exercise, vision and balance retraining, and strategies to manage daily activities while you heal.
Every concussion is different, so we create a plan tailored to your needs—helping you return to work, school, or sport safely and with confidence.
Treating concussions as a physiotherapist falls within the physiotherapy scope of practice without additional training. However, in order to improve understanding and more effectively treat concussions, most physiotherapists interested in concussion care actively pursue additional training in order to better serve their patients.
As such, Jacqueline has taken multiple levels of concussion training, as well as basic and advanced vestibular rehabilitation training. This allows her to better serve this group of people who require comprehensive care for their complex concussion needs.
The Garden Physiotherapy appreciates the complexity of concussion injuries and strives to manage patients using the most current and effective treatment techniques.
Many body systems are impacted by concussions. Therefore, the symptoms can range considerably:
